Carers

We are a Carer Friendly GP!

If you look after someone who couldn’t manage without your help, you may be an unpaid carer. Our practice is working with Devon Carers to ensure all unpaid carers registered with our surgery receive the best information, advice and support available to them.

How do I know if I am an unpaid carer?

Do you look after someone?
Do they have a medical condition, mental health illness or drug/alcohol addiction?
Would they struggle to cope without your support?

If yes – you are an unpaid carer!

How can our practice support you?

  • Identify and keep a register of carers
  • Actively support the mental and physical health and wellbeing of all carers registered with our surgery
  • Provide our staff with carer awareness training to enable them to support carers
  • Make our services accessible to all carers
  • Actively inform, involve and communicate with carers
  • Promote a carer friendly culture

How can I access support?

Firstly, tell our receptionist that you are an unpaid carer – they will note this on your patient record. We may be able to offer support such as:

  • Longer appointment times for you to accompany the person you care for
  • Offering you the opportunity to have a flu jab
  • Signposting to local services to assist you
  • Where appropriate, we will involve you in discussions around the persons care/treatment

Carers Allowance Information

Honiton Carers Support Group

Honiton Carers recognise that unpaid carers are often isolated and lonely and almost always physically and emotionally exhausted as a result of their often 24/7 caring responsibilities.

Honiton Carers Support Group welcomes all carers, including those supporting someone with dementia.

They meet in a safe and private environment twice a month and also hold a monthly social meet-up in a local café. They offer various activities at our indoor meetings such as Art & Craft workshops and have speakers and trainers giving talks on both caring and non-caring related subjects.

Free transport can be provided to these meetings if required.

Telephone support is available for carers who cannot attend, along with weekly emails containing the latest information.

For further details, please visit their website, call 07974 636926 or email : winniekjaer@btinternet.com
